BRIGHTON, ON - On Saturday September 23rd, Pete “Mr. Small Block” Bicknell returned to Brighton Speedway along with 25 other 358 DIRT modifieds. For Pete it was his first visit to the trackin over 20 years, a track he had never lost on.
The night started out great with 26 Small Block Modifieds helping to make up the 121 cars total that filled the pit area. A diverse crowd from all over Ontario, Quebec and upstate New York braved the threatening weather and was on hand for the annual CARQUEST Auto Parts Pplefest 358 Dirt Modified Shootout presented by ImageFactor.ca. Although Mother Nature called the program short, the sound of 358 Dirt Modifieds once again came to life as all the heats were run as well as the Lucas Oil Clash for Cash which pitted the best drivers from the Eastern Lucas Oil Canadian Series versus the best of the Western Lucas Oil Shootout Series for a $5,000 purse. These six drivers were met on the track by the four CARQUEST Applefest Shootout heat winners from earlier in the evening, including local favourite Tim Kerr of Picton, who took his first win of the season on “home” dirt. Other heat winners included; Mario Clair, Ken Cosgrove and Scott Wood.
Rick Richner and Mario Clair started on the poll for the Lucas Oil Clash for Cash and by lap 4 Pete Bicknell worked his way to the point coming off turn four and wouldn’t look back holding off Scott Wood and last years Applefest Champion Kyle Dingwall.
It wasn’t long after the Clash that the rains started to fall and would cut the night short before the 40 lap main event could be run. Brighton Promoter Mark Rinaldi met with the drivers and in the consistency of how this event was first conceived the decision was made with input from all. The fact that many drivers had towed 3 plus hours to get there made the decision easy as they elected to take a partial purse and not reschedule the feature.
