Rudolph, Sandercock, Hennessy, & Fontaine Capture Applefest Shootout Wins

For Immediate Release – September 20th, 2014

BRIGHTON (September 20, 2014) – The final racing event of 2014 saw 77 cars sign-in for action on night two of the 2014 Benson Auto Parts Applefest Shootout presented by Cool 100. The night featured a 100-lap DIRTcar 358 Modified Shootout to wrap up the season.

Rudolph Captures 358 Modified Shootout

Danny O’Brien (No.M96) and Lance Willix II (No.16) started on the front row for the 100-lap 358 Modified Applefest Shootout. O’Brien grabbed the early lead while Willix settiled in to second. The race was slowed early on lap five when Brandon Easy (No.06) hit the outside wall on the frontstretch, ending his night.

Prior to another caution on lap 19, sixth-place started Erick Rudolph (No.25R) of Ransomville, NY drove in to the second spot. Race leader Danny O’Brien chose the outside lane for the restart allowing Rudolph to get a run on the inside lane. On lap 24, Rudolph took over the point.

Shortly after, Carey Terrance (No.66x) of Hogansburg, NY drove to second, but Rudolph pulled away in lapped traffic during a 28-lap green flag run.

A caution on lap 47 for Joe Banks (No.75J) who rolled to a stop on the frontstretch. Three laps shy of the halfway point, Rudolph led Terrance, O’Brien, Chad Brachmann (No.3B), and Ryan Arbuthnot (No.R70).

The next 34 laps saw four caution periods involving Mat Williamson (No.6M), Jeff McGinnis (No.1R), Willix, and Roger Levesque (No.24).

Following a lap 74 restart, O’Brien used lapped traffic to get by Terrance for second. The side-by-side battle between the two drivers allowed Rudolph to pull away at the front of the field. Terrance overtook O’Brien on lap 95, but neither driver had anything for Rudolph in the end.

The victory was the first at Brighton Speedway for the 22 year-old. Rudolph extended his lead in the DIRTcar 358 Modified tour standings over Terrance to 61 points with four race remaining, including one of the famed Syracuse Mile as part of Super DIRT week in October.

Sandercock Claims Final Pro Late Model Feature of Season, Championship

Tim Kerr (No.20K Krown Rust Control) and Austin King (No.89 Durmach Excellence in Tooling) led the Pro Late Model field the green flag for the final 30-lap feature in 2014. Kerr took the early lead, while Charlie Sandercock (No.57 Bellevue Fabricating) took over second after starting third.

The first of two cautions came on lap four when Jeff Mosco (No.9 Peake Wood Products) spun in turn four. The ensuing restart pitted Kerr and Sandercock side-by-side where they would run evenly and exchange the lead for the next 11 laps.

On lap 18, Sandercock finally cleared Kerr, using lapped traffic to force the No.20k behind a slower car to complete the pass. The second yellow came again for Mosco, who spun in turn two.

Lap 21 saw Phil Potts (No.29 Vanderlaan Building Products) drove through the field to take second from Kerr. Potts challenged Sandercock for the lead, tapping the back bumper on a pair of occasions, but was not able to get by.

Sandercock led the final 12 laps to earn his eighth win of the year at Brighton. The win also handed him his second consecutive Pro Late Model championship at Brighton. He also won the Late Model championship at Chapman’s Can-Am Motorsport Park in 2014, and currently leads the Go Nuclear! Late Model Series standings with three races remaining.

Hennessy Earns Seventh Win; Scott Defends Championship

Derek Bowers (No.03 Morton’s Crane Rental) and Warren Mowat (No.46 Tri-County Plastics) brought the OilGARD Canadian Modifieds to the green flag for the 25-lap feature. The points battle entering the feature saw just a five-point gap between Dan Ferguson (No.11 Kilmarnock Enterprise) and Ryan Scott (No.33 J&J Automotive) meant the driver that finished closest to the front would take home the title.

Mowat went over the berm in turn three on the opening lap, allowing third-place started Andrew Hennessy (No.87 Custom Automotive) to take over the lead. Scott was on the move, taking over the second spot from Adam Whaley (No.12 John’s Equipment) on lap five.

On lap seven, contact between Ferguson the lapped car of Buckey Johnson (No.81) caused Ferguson to spin to the infield in turn one, resulting in a pair of flat rear tires.

On lap 12, the battle for the lead heated up between Hennessy and Scott. Exiting turn two, Scott got a run underneath Hennessy on the extreme bottom of the race track. The two drivers made contact entering turn three, spinning Hennessy to the infield. Scott was sent to the tail of the field as the cause of the yellow.

Hennessy retook his spot at the point and grew his lead to over four seconds by the time he crossed the finish line for his seventh win of the season. Scott drove back to a third-place finish, while Ferguson was sixth. Scott successfully defended his 2013 championship with another in 2014, despite going winless throughout the season.

Fontaine Invades for Pro Stock Victory

The final race of the 2014 Duel On The Dirt challenge series between the Brighton and Merrittville Speedways Pro Stock and Hoosier Stock divisions proved to be an exciting one. James Thompson (No.00 Greeves Automotive) and Jim Lampman (No.28x D&S Automotive) led the 24-car field to the green flag for the 50-lap finale.

Thompson grabbed the early lead while Jason Fontaine (No.1J) settled in to the second spot. Fontaine took over the point on lap three and had his pace slowed by a caution for Mark Fawcett (No.32F) on lap five.

The caution was out again on lap 11 when the power plant expired on Lampman’s Monte Carlo while running third.

Fontaine led the middle portion of the race, holding off Thompson on a trio of restarts. Lap 24 saw Brighton track champion Doug Anderson (No.72 Hunt’s Bobcat Service) pass Thompson for second.

The final restart of the race came with 19 laps to go after a Leslie Mowat (No.2 Tri-County Plastics) spin in turn two. With smoke getting thicker out the back of Fontaine’s No.1J, due to what he would later say was a transmission fluid leak, he had Anderson all over his back bumper.

Fontaine’s transmission held up until the checkered flag while he held off Anderson to the end to earn the victory. Anderson, meanwhile, captured the overall Duel On The Dirt championship over Justin Ramsay (No.03 Empey Tire), who finished fifth.

Congratulations to the 2014 Champions

The final checkered flag has waved in each of the Brighton Speedway weekly divisions in 2014. Del MacGregor won his third straight Stingers championship.

Rich Sanders captured the Bill’s Johns Comp 4 championship with his seventh win of the season on Saturday night.

Doug Anderson earned his fifth consecutive Pro Stock championship on the strength of seven victories.

Ryan Scott successfully defended his Canadian Modified championship, taking the point lead on the final night of action.

Charlie Sandercock earned his second consecutive Pro Late Model crown after winning eight times in 2014.
