Lindberg, Fawcett, St. Pierre, Sanders, Fletcher Win On Night One Of Applefest Shootout

For Immediate Release – September 19th, 2014

BRIGHTON (September 19, 2014) – The first night of the Benson Auto Parts Applefest Shootout presented by Cool 100 saw 101 cars sign in for action on a chilly night at Brighton Speedway. A full field of 30 cars checked in to qualify for the DIRTcar Sportsman Mr.DIRT tour shootout presented by Benson Auto Parts, Cool 100, Lucas Oil, Coca-Cola, VP Racing Fuels, Mystical Distributing, and ImageFactor.ca.

Lindberg Claims Sportsman Shootout

Brockville, Ont.’s Dylan Evoy (No.83) and Potsdam, NY driver Mike Maresca (No.7) started on the front row for the 35-lap DIRTcar Sportsman A-Main. Evoy led the opening lap before Maresca quickly took over the point on lap three.

Ridgeway, Ont. pilot Gary Lindberg (No.28) was the quick mover, racing from his seventh starting spot to third on lap three. Lindberg took over the top spot on lap five, just before the first caution for a spinning Jamie Young (No.29x) in turn two.

Following the restart, Cody McPherson (No.7am) went three-wide with Maresca and Evoy to take over the runner-up spot. A 16-lap green flag run allowed McPherson to track down Lindberg in lapped traffic. McPherson briefly took over the top spot, going four-wide with a pair of lapped cars and Lindberg on lap 18. Lindberg took the top spot back on lap 19.

McPherson challenged Lindberg on two more restarts on lap 21, when Rob Knapp (No.2k) parked himself in the turn two creek, and on lap 30 when Brianna Ladouceur (No.15b) spun in turn four. On both occasions, Lindberg’s track position was enough to hold off McPherson for the victory. Cornwall, Ont. native Shane Pecore (No.0) grabbed the final spot on the podium.

Lindberg, Evoy, McPherson, and series point-leader Mathieu Desjardins (No.1M) won the qualifying heats.

Fawcett Wins Pro Stock Finale

Jay O’Hara (No.83 1st Guaranty Collision) and Leslie Mowat (No.2 Tri-County Plastics) started up front for the 20-lap Brighton Automotive Pro Stock finale. O’Hara led early, holding Mowat to the outside lane. O’Hara lost the lead after contact in turn three with a pair of other cars left him facing the wrong way.

Shawn Gregory (No.1 Like Nu Driveway Sealing) took over the top spot for the restart, but hard-charging Justin Ramsay (No.03 Empey Tire) took over the point on lap 11 in turn three. Ramsay’s lead didn’t last long either, as Mark Fawcett (No.32F) got by Ramsay for the lead with five laps to go.

Fawcett, the 2014 Merrittville Speedway champion, led the final five laps, and survived a lap 17 restart, to earn the victory.

Gregory, Jason Fontaine (No.1J) and Doug Anderson (No.72 Hunt’s Bobcat Service) won the qualifying heats.

Sanders Trumps Comp 4 Field

Shelby Mills (No.78 ABC Taxi) and Jeff Humphrey (No.17 Klenisteuber Metal) held front row starting spots for the final Bill’s Johns Comp 4 feature of the season. Humphrey took the lead from Mills on lap two, but his No.17 broke and was taken to the pit area during a caution one lap later.

Brady Greer (No.94 Greer Excavating) took over the point on the restart. A lap seven caution slowed the field when Riley Greer (No.47 Greer Propane) got turned on the frontstretch after contact with Tyler French (No.0 ABC Taxi). On lap 11, Brady’s car appeared to break in the front end in turn one while leading, ending his night.

Mills reassumed the lead, but point leader Rich Sanders (No.29 Fowl Mood Racing) grabbed the lead on lap 12 and led the final three laps for his seventh win of the season. Mills finished second and Brockville Speedway regular Michael Dillon held on to third.

Fletcher Wins Stinger Closeout

A large Quinte Septic Stinger field saw 17 cars sign in for the final A-main of the season. Andy Fletcher (No.42 Like-Nu Driveway Sealing) started on the pole and used his track position to his advantage.

Fletcher led by a full straightaway over Chris Lammle (No.95 Lammle Auto Repair) until a caution for a spinning Alix Woods (No.38) on lap eight.

Another caution on lap 10 involving Dawson Evans (No.01 Smitty’s Appliances) meant a final restart for Fletcher. He executed it perfectly to hold off Lammle and Del MacGregor (No.19 R.Ward Construction) for his first win of the season.

Gary Taylor (No.89 International Freight Systems) and David Lemon (No.27) won the qualifying heats.

St.Pierre Dominates Vintage Club Feature

The final appearance at Brighton Speedway for the Eastern Ontario Vintage Stock Car Club had a strong 12-car field lined up for action. Welland, Ont. driver Rick St.Pierre (No.20k) started on the pole and never gave up the top spot, leading all 20 laps for the victory.

Paul Billings (No.B22) made it a close race on several occasions with Wayne Riddell (No.9w) knocking on the door for the lead as well. St.Pierre’s line around the middle of the race track was strong enough for him to hold off the two hard chargers.

Shawn Gregory (No.01) and Riddell won the qualifying heats.
