For Immediate Release – September 15th, 2014
BRIGHTON
– Brighton Speedway is set to host the 10th annual
Benson Auto Parts Applefest Shootout weekend this Friday,
September 19 and Saturday, September 20. The huge two-day
show will cap off an exciting and successful racing season
at Brighton Speedway. The event features the only visits in
2014 for the DIRTcar Sportsman and 358 Modifieds. Brighton
Speedway track champions will also be crowned in each of the
five divisions.
Applefest
Shootout Night One – Friday, September 19
The
DIRTcar Sportsman Modifieds invade on Friday night for a Mr.
DIRT 35-lap feature event. Last year, Cornwall, Ont. driver
Shane Pecore drove his No.0 to victory lane ahead of 30
other starters in the main event. St. Catherines, Ont.
native Cody McPherson won the 2012 edition of the race.
Chris Herbison won the 2010 event, Nic Cupolo in 2009, James
Michael Friesen in 2008, and Mark D’Ilario in 2007.
The race was rained out in 2011. Merrittville/Humberstone
Speedway regular Brad Rouse of St. Catherines is the current
DIRTcar Sportsman tour point leader.
The
Eastern Ontario Vintage Stock Car Series returns for the
third visit of 2014. Peter Stapper wheeled his No.28
to victory on June 21 and Trenton, Ont.’s Shawn Gregory
won the July 26 feature.
All
Brighton Speedway regular divisions will be on tap
throughout the weekend. Double points are on the line for
each division, meaning each championship is still up for
grabs.
The
Brighton Automotive Pro Stocks will decide their 2014
champion Friday night. Doug Anderson is looking to clinch
his fifth consecutive championship in the division, entering
the night with a 295-point lead over Leslie Mowat. Justin
Ramsay sits third in the standings entering the final night
ahead of Wade Purchase and Jamie Marshall.
The
Bill’s Johns Comp 4s will also solve a tight 2014
championship chase. Rich Sanders enters the night with a
135-point lead over Brady Greer. Shelby Mills, Riley Greer,
and Emily Weedman complete the top-five in the current
standings.
One
final race in the 2014 season for the Quinte Septic Stingers
could alter the championship winner. Del MacGregor is
holding a commanding lead as he looks for his third straight
championship. He holds a 295-point advantage entering the
final night. Rick Phillips, Chris Lammle, Andy Fletcher, and
Jordan Pickell complete the top-five in the standings.
Applefest
Shootout Night Two – Saturday, September 20
DIRTcar
358 Modifieds will battle for 100 laps and headline the
second half of the Applefest Shootout weekend. Last year’s
race was rained out along with the 2009 and 2006 races.
‘Super’ Mario Clair of Drummondville, QC won the most
recent race in 2012 and also in 2007. Tim O’Brien won the
2011 edition of the race, Pete Bicknell won in 2010 and
2008, while Kyle Dingwall won the inaugural race in 2005.
Merrittville Speedway 2014 track champion Matt Williamson
will be a strong contender as well. Ransomville, NY driver
Erick Rudolph leads the current DIRTcar 358 Modified tour
standings.
The
Vanderlaan Building Products Pro Late Models will be the
undercard with a 2014 championship on the line. Charlie
Sandercock enters the night with a 110-point advantage over
Steve Baldwin. Phil Potts, Matt Vanderlinden, and Adam
Turner are the top-five entering the final night of
competition, with double points on the line.
The
tightest points battle in regular weekly racing is in the
OilGARD Anti-Rust Canadian Modified division. Dan Ferguson
enters the final night with a 70-point lead over Ryan Scott.
Andrew Hennessy remains in the mix, 215 points behind
Ferguson. Doug O’Blenis and Dale Locke continue in the
fourth and fifth spots, respectively.
The
Brighton Automotive Pro Stocks will battle for the final
time this season in the 50-lap Merrittville/Brighton Duel in
the Dirt. The non-points race will see the top drivers from
the two tracks battle for Pro Stock supremacy. James
Thompson, a Merrittville and Humberstone regular, won a
50-lap invitational at Brighton on August 31. Jason Fontaine
of Port Colborne, Ont. won the first leg of the Duel on the
Dirt at Merrittville on September 6.
